Honda Recalls Odyssey Twice in One Week – 2011 Honda Odyssey

Car Issues No Comments »

Honda is recalling more than 36,000 Odyssey minivans from the MY 2011. The recall is over two different problems related to the vehicle’s windshield wipers and windows. The second recall for a problem with the front windows affects 2,800 Honda Odyssey minivans.

  • Some Odysseys were built with front windows manufactured with an incorrect primer fluid
  • Due to this incorrect primer fluid, holding clips designed to bind to the glass may separate
  • It’s possible that the driver and passenger power windows would come off the track and hinder the working of the windows
  • If the holding clips separate the windows come off the track and stop working
  • The windows will not be able to go up or down and could also drop into the window tract
  • This anomaly potentially leads to either binding or shattering of the window within the door
  • If the windows shatter into the van, it could injure the driver and passengers

Dealers will inspect window clips and replace the glass panes, if necessary.

2800 Honda Odyssey minivans produced between October 19th and October 27th 2010 are subject to this recall. Honda will begin notifying owners of affected vehicles in the first half of April.

In the first recall, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced that

  • It is possible that the front windshield wiper blades become frozen to the windshield
  • In such state, if the wiper motor is turned on, one of the front windshield wiper linkage rods may bend or separate from the motor
  • The bending or separation of front windshield wiper linkage rods from the motor is due to insufficient stiffness of the rod
  • This in turn may cause the windshield wipers to stop working
  • In bad weathers of rain or snow, driver’s visibility would be hindered increasing the risk for an accident

This recall affects 33,341 Honda Odyssey minivans from the 2011 model year. Honda dealers will replace the front windshield wiper rod free of charge for owners of affected Odyssey vehicles. This windshield wiper recall will start on or before the 14th of April.

Honda dealers will replace either the passenger and/or driver’s front window glass free of charge to owners. This window recall will start on or before the 15th of April which is only one day after the wiper recall. Owners of affected vehicles will most likely be able to get both problems fixed at the same time.

If you think the safety recall are easy to handle consider the following offers by Honda:

  • Honda is offering a sign and drive lease deal on the Odyssey in March
  • With $0 due at lease signing, shoppers can lease the 2011 Odyssey five-speed automatic LX for $380 a month for 36 months
  • The 2011 Honda Odyssey five-speed automatic LX can also be leased for $319 a month for 36 months with $1,999 due at signing

Chrysler Issues Recalls 250,000 Vehicles to Fix Potential Engine Stalling

Car Issues No Comments »

Chrysler Group LLC is recalling around 250,000 vehicles to fix potential engine stalling. The vehicles were built between August 2009 and June 2010.

According to the Chrysler Group LLC, the Auburn Hills, Michigan company, it will recall

  • 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan
  • Chrysler Town & Country minivans
  • 2010 Dodge Journey crossovers

These vehicles are recalled in the wake of reports concerning the ignition key. The ignition key could move while the car is being driven and cause the engine to shut off.

Chrysler says if the engine shuts off while driving, it could increase the risk of a crash. There have been 32 customer complaints and two rear-end crashes which have been reported. The recall is expected to begin in April.

Yellow Sac Spider Forces Recall of 67,000 Mazda 6 models

Meanwhile, Mazda Motor Corp. is recalling more than 50,000 Mazda6 cars of the 2009-2010 model years in the United States. Mazda Motor Corp. is recalling another 15,000 vehicles in Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico. The recall was announced in the wake of the reports of spider webs in the cars’ vents.

Mazda has determined that yellow sac spiders, or Cheiracanthium inclusum, are building their nests in some 4-cylinder Mazda 6 fuel systems, especially, in the evaporative canister vent line. This restriction can cause the fuel tank to become over pressured. Mazda is recalling approximately 67,000 Mazda 6 models due to possible over-pressuring of the fuel system which can possibly cause the fuel tank to crack or leak, posing a fire hazard.

Mazda Motor dealers identified 20 cases of yellow sac spider webs infesting the vents. The Mazda Motor Corp employees have no clue as to why yellow sac spiders were nesting in the Mazda6 alone exclusively.

The Mazda 6 vehicles affected were built between April 2008 and February 2010. Owners will be notified by mid-March and told to take their vehicles to dealers for inspection and repairs. Mazda dealers will inspect the cars and repair any faults in the fuel system if necessary.

Ford recalls 144,000 F-150 for Air bag problem

Car Issues No Comments »

According to the Ford Motor Co, it would recall around 144,000 Ford F-150 models in the United States and Canada. These recalled vehicles are from the 2005 and 2006 model years. These F-150 models pose a risk with their airbags that could deploy because of a short circuit. Now these 144,000 F-150 pickup trucks are being recalled to fix this potential problem of inadvertent inflation of the  driver’s airbag during normal driving that could result in a crash or injuries. Some of these injuries can be from the bag itself.

Ford has admitted that it had received a number of complaints about the airbag problem:

  • It is alleged that this inadvertent air bag deployment occurs shortly after start up
  • It is suspected that during assembly, a specific airbag wire located in the steering wheel could have been improperly positioned
  • This wire may chafe, expose bare copper and cause an airbag wire in the steering wheel to short circuit
  • This shortcut in turn would illuminate the warning lamp
  • This anomaly if not attended promptly would cause an inadvertent driver frontal airbag deployment

According to the automaker, most of the vehicles with the flawed wire appeared to have been built during the first shift working at the Norfolk, Virginia, plant between November 2004 and June 2005. In the US around 135,000 trucks are being recalled and 9,000, in Canada.

The car maker has also assured that the risk of unwanted airbag deployment is relatively low and the airbag warning light would illuminate many times before a deployment. According to Ford Co, in most cases, when a vehicle’s airbag inflated due to this issue, it occurred within a few seconds after the truck was started. In cases where the airbag has deployed in the trucks, Ford said that a warning light had been illuminated notifying drivers that the vehicle needed service.

The recall notice was not immediately posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website as it was not known as to how many drivers had complained of the problem or if there were any reports of related injuries.

The car maker will notify the owners in early March and ask them to take the vehicles to their local dealer for replacement of the wiring harness. The safety repairs would involve replacement of the wiring harness. The automaker hopes that the repair to replace the flawed wiring harness would take less than half a day and would be done at no charge to the consumers by the Ford dealerships.

According to the Ford Motor Co. the figure of 144,000 F-150 pickups in the US and Canada accounts only to a small fraction of the 1.3 million trucks the National Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) wanted to be recalled. The safety agency is reviewing Ford’s plan and will decide whether the 144,000 F-150 pickups recall is adequate or it can actually get Ford to recall all the vehicles it asked for.

The Ford F-series truck has been the best-selling US passenger vehicle for nearly 30 years.

Brand New 2011 Model-year Ford Explorer Faces Recall Over Seat Recline Mechanism

Car Issues No Comments »

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently issued a notice that Ford is recalling more than 1,600 of their newly designed Explorers equipped with manual recline second row seats. According to the recall, the seats supplied by Lear Corporation and did not meet federal safety standards. It is alleged that the seats may not provide the required strength in the event of an auto accident.

The brand new Explorer was equipped with second row 60 percent seats with manual recliner mechanisms that may have components that do not conform to the dimensional specification. These seats fail to conform to the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 207 – the seating system.

The redesigned Explorer is built in Chicago. The new Ford Explorer for 2011 was launched in late 2010 and more than 7,300 were sold in January. These figures actually are 70 percent higher than those of the SUV’s older version, a year earlier.

According to Ford, the problem was discovered on the 14th of December, 2010 at its Chicago Assembly Plant when one of the vehicles was isolated with a noise in its second-row 60 percent seat. That seat was removed from the unit and returned to the seat supplier. Upon inspection, the seat showed unexpected observable movement in the center recliner/seat-back during manual forward loading. Ford has instructed its dealers to stop selling affected vehicles until their seats are fixed.

With less than 2 months into 2011, Ford has already recalled more than 900,000 vehicles, which is almost 600,000 more than all the vehicles recalled in 2010. The recall affects 2011 model-year Explorers that were manufactured between July and December 2011.

Ford has stopped shipment of the affected model and advised dealers not to sell any vehicles built between July and December 2011 until they are repaired. Ford said it would repair recalled vehicles under warranty for consumers who have already purchased them. According the Ford, recall notices will be sent from the 14th of February.

According to Ford, the number two US automaker is also going to recall around 363,000 of its top-selling F-150 pickup trucks over an issue with interior door handles though the recalls keep adding to the cost of quality and safety campaigns.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) there have been no accidents, injuries, or deaths reported or connected to the seat issue on the brand new Explorer. The recall of this brand new Explorer is an important proactive safety measure.

Ford’s brand new Explorer recall campaign number is 11c15.

Do You think your Rental Car is Safe?

Car Issues No Comments »

It is alleged that the rental companies wait until it is convenient for them to get safety recall repairs. If the car is not on the road the rental car agencies lose income and they schedule its safety recall repairs to suit their convenience.

In the wake of reports of injuries and deaths in rental cars, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has begun investigating whether the rental cars are fixed for any safety recalls and problems.

The NHTSA opened an investigation called the ‘audit query’ into the recall-remedy completion by rental car companies. Such ‘audit query’ investigations by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are rare. There was only one ‘audit query’ in 2010 and two, in 2009.

In the wake of one especially fatal rental car accident that cost two young people their lives and the car rental company, $15 million the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation to check if rental car companies are allowing safety recall repairs on their vehicles religiously. According to the NHTSA, there was a steep spike in fatal crashes involving rental vehicles listed for safety recalls.

As part of its investigation, the NHTSA requested:

  • Information on recall notices issued for 29 US vehicles models most commonly favored by rental-car fleets
  • Chrysler, Ford and General Motors to provide information on all their three million vehicles favored by rental companies in wake of recalls
  • Information on the models Chevrolet Malibu, Ford Fusion and Chrysler Sebring that are listed for safety recalls
  • A report from the auto makers as to how long it took to complete their safety recall repairs
  • Information on how the top ten rental car companies in the US reacted to recall notices and complied to safety recall repairs

According to the NHTSA:

  • The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) was asked to prohibit rental car agencies if they have complied to the safety recalls by allowing safety repairs on their cars
  • No car rental company should risk an injury, death or lawsuit by continuing to put the recalled vehicle on the road for rental
  • The car rental company should not ply any recalled vehicles until the safety repairs are made
  • A rental company should not let its corporate greed precede the safety of the consumers
  • The auto makers also should send the safety recall notices to the car rental companies in a timely manner.

Federal traffic safety officials are investigating to check if rental car agencies respond to recalls promptly or let their convenience precede in having their vehicles fixed.

  • Under the federal law, no dealership should sell vehicles that are subject to open safety recalls
  • An auto maker should notify all the rental car companies to take the recalled vehicles out of service and repair them before returning them to service
  • There should be laws that make rental car companies repair recalled vehicles mandatory before they put their cars back on the roads

The NHTSA recall database offers information to consumers about vehicle recalls in general. This kind of information would help consumers decide on the use of rental cars.

Caring for your Car – Way to Increase its Resale Value

Car Issues No Comments »

If you are considering selling your favorite car and getting a trendier car, how do you plan to increase the resale value of your car?

The secret is to keep your old car as good as new. A car is our most expensive investment. A new car tends to depreciate as soon as it leaves the showroom and continues to do so even after it is older than two years. When we keep our car shining like new car it adds value to itself without our knowing it. You would not be surprised if somebody makes a passing remark about its supposed value close to the show room price.

An impressive car costs more than it should despite its age. By taking good care of your car you not only are increasing its resale value, saving on bigger repairs but you are also extending its youth. Meanwhile if you had lost your heart to a newer edition or other brand you might consider selling it as a used car. Your old car fetches you a very good price because it is in a top condition. The young drivers in your family can also contribute to the health of your car.

Here are some useful tips that will help you keep your car looking new:

  • The young drivers know the basics under-hood
  • The young drivers can handle engine, alternator, battery, transmission and radiator
  • The young drivers can use oil dipstick, filler, coolant reservoir and washer fluid bottle
  • The young drivers can recall and locate them
  • Make sure the spare tire in their car has air in it
  • The young drivers can discern the right jack and fit it at the right jacking point

The young drivers can maintain the emergency kit:

  • They can maintain an emergency toolkit and a first-aid kit in your car even if the car is old or you only drive around town
  • Your teen driver knows where the kit is and what it contains
  • They can maintain an emergency toolkit and the first-aid kit with flares, emergency triangles and a blanket

Get the paperwork in order:

  • Make sure the young drivers have the proper insurance papers and registration in the vehicle
  • Make sure they know where these papers are
  • Tape a cheat sheet inside the glove box door for the young drivers, with who to call, what to say and what to present in case of exigency
  • Give them a cell phone for emergencies
  • Make sure they never use it while driving
  • Caution your teen driver about distraction
  • Place limits on friends who can ride along with him

The High Cost of Low Priced Cars

Car Issues No Comments »

People are buying more small cars and these are the people who are looking for ways and means to save fuel costs. They might be overlooking one factor while buying a smaller vehicle, that they are endangering themselves and their families. Smaller cars are too big a price to pay for fuel economy. Cheap cars had a reputation for poor build quality and low safety. To reduce costs, manufacturers adopt outdated techniques, use cheap material and components and remove as many features as possible. Increased car prices mean that the cars are getting safer and you can use them longer. Cars are getting more complicated and expensive because of fuel efficiency and added safety. If one wants fuel economy, one has to pay for it, but not in safety.

The high cost of low priced cars is its safety features. In the manufacture of a cheap car the car safety is the first casualty. More than 100,000 people are killed a year in small and cheap car accidents. Smaller cars are too big a price to pay for better fuel economy and small cars are not as safe as bigger ones.

The newest small vehicles, of course, meet today’s strict safety standards and come with the latest safety hardware, such as stability control and side air bags. They are safer than ever. And differing designs mean some small cars are safer than average. But even the safest cars cannot defy laws of Physics. The laws of Physics rule in favor of bigger and heavier vehicle, even during single-vehicle crash.

A report by a group called the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) shows that the least-safe small cars are at least 90% more dangerous than mid-size and full-size cars. This means that the driver in a small car is almost twice as likely to get killed.

There are two major factors that make a car very safe:

  • Prevention: How well the vehicle is designed to prevent an accident
  • Crash-worthiness: How well they perform in a crash

As the switch to smaller and lighter vehicles is growing so is the fatality rate that could have been avoided by the use of bigger vehicles, according to fatality records and safety forecasters. A driver is up to twice as likely to die in a small car as in a mid-size, according to IIHS data, too. A 2003 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) report also showed same results. Small cars can turn safer, but that would cost. Safety in a small car increases its price and cuts the mileage, defeating the very purpose of buying a small car.

According to a IIHS publication Shopping for a Safer Car 2007:

  • Safety-minded buyers should pass up very small light vehicles
  • Size and weight are the first crash-worthiness attributes to consider in a car

Lower prices and better mileage of small cars are alluring. Multiple air bags, stability control and other modern safety features have convinced people that small cars are not dangerous. People also believe that small cars are more agile and lets them avoid crashes. Because of their size, small cars appear more maneuverable and inspire drivers to risk weaving into traffic. A large vehicle would not have normally allowed such freedom to risk lives by such driving.

The NHTSA data shows that the safety trade-offs in cars for size and fuel economy are galling:

  • One from every 11 people died in small cars as a result of collisions with SUVs
  • 53% of small-car deaths in 2005 involved only small cars
  • Small cars crashing into guardrails or trees and two small cars crashing into each other is very common

Vehicles are safer today than they were 15 or 20 years ago. Cars are better designed these days to handle crashes.

New safety systems developed by major auto makers for big cars also make small cars safe:

  • A new safety systems with a Radar tells us what is in front and alongside the cars
  • A new safety systems with a Radar takes control if a driver fails to understand what is happening
  • There are new safety systems that alert drivers if they are going too fast to avoid a crash
  • There are new safety systems that alert drivers if they are too close and slow their cars

There will be more safety systems that might well become mandatory on small cars too. These safety systems do not either come free or cheap. Expensive changes will be made on for fuel economy and emission reduction. Car makers are trying out numerous electronic safety systems to warn the driver of road hazards and correct dangerous driving.

However, there is no such thing as a totally safe car. The reality is, no matter how safe a vehicle is, the way it is driven alone can make it the safest. All vehicles are safer these days but the biggest safety factor is still its driver.

A vehicle is stolen every 26.4 seconds in the US

Car Issues No Comments »

According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), a vehicle is stolen every 26.4 seconds and the average value of each stolen car is $6,649. Car thieves look for practicality but not luxury so that they can easily strip it to sell as it for its parts. Many of the cars listed here are more than 10 years old emphasizing the choice of the thieves as the most stolen vehicles in the US for 2006.

  • The 1995 Honda Civic was the most stolen vehicle: It was the first of its kind, with it’s VTEC engine. The VTEC engine remains popular among car tuners today because it can be easily modified to produce significant amounts of power efficiently
  • Honda’s 1991 Accord ranked is second most stolen vehicle: During three of this model’s four years of production, it was the best-selling car in the US (1990-1992). Thieves loved the way they were available for them to easily pilfer their parts
  • The 1989 Toyota Camry was the third-most stolen vehicle in the US for 2006
  • Ford’s 1997 F-150 series pickup was the fourth-most stolen vehicle in the US
  • The 2005 Dodge Ram was the number five in the most stolen vehicle list in the US for 2006 which indicates that auto thieves have taste too
  • 1994 Chevy C/K 1500 pickups and the Honda Accord were sixth on the NICB list for the most stolen vehicle in the US for 2006. The Chevy’s truck featured a third brake light on the back of the truck’s cab for safety and a revised CFC-free air conditioning system to benefit the environment
  • The 1994 Nissan Sentra was the seventh-most stolen vehicle as the ’94 Sentra was the last to feature an independent rear suspension for better handling. Their more-powerful SE-R model version was a favorite of the car thieves
  • The 1994 Dodge Caravan was the eighth on the list as the most stolen vehicle. This second-generation upscale Chrysler Town and Country and the economy-minded Voyager from Plymouth had sales of about 4 million vehicles in the 10 years for the car thieves to go on rampage
  • The 1994 Saturn SL was ninth on the list as the most stolen vehicle. The SL models were known for their excellent fuel economy and their dent-resistant panels which were made from polymer and the car thieves loved it
  • Acura’s 1990 Integra was 10th on NICB’s list as the most stolen vehicle which is well loved for its handling prowess, more so by the car thieves

By the time you are through with this, an average of two vehicles must have been already stolen in the U.S and, three if you do it slowly. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), a vehicle is stolen every 26.4 seconds in the US.

Get the Best Car Deals on the Outgoing Models in the Year-end sale

Car Issues No Comments »

Do you think you are getting the best car deal on the outgoing models in this year-end sale?

Of course you will, if you keep an eye open for the year-end car buying traps and avoid them. Year-end sales are the annual clearance events when car-makers cut prices to get old models out of their showrooms. If you follow some basic rules, you can protect yourself from being taken out on a long ride by the sales persons who aim at selling you a car to generate as much profit for the dealership as they can.

If you are ready with the hints mentioned below, you would be able to deal with those enthusiastic staff or loan officers and have the courage to say no to the deal:

  • Choose only one executive to deal with your enquiries. Do not entertain all those sales personnel, the sales manager, the finance manager, the floor manager and the used-car manager who are out to lead you into a deal you do not want to enter into
  • Dealers advertise for one model loaded with attractive features for a reasonable price but offer a lesser model with less value. The minute you realize the mischief walk away
  • Don’t give up the keys to your current vehicle for its trade-in value to be assessed, or as collateral while you take a test drive. If you do not like the deal you may find it difficult to retrieve your own car
  • Don’t let the salesperson pressure and bully you into buying impulsively. Be focused on the kind of car you need and what you can pay. If you do not get what you want walk away
  • Read carefully over any invoice or contract before you sign. Alarms, extra cleaning, prepping, rust-proofing, fabric protection and paint sealant are all common. Pay extra attention to unnecessary add-ons that may appear on the invoice
  • Consider doing the Vehicle Information Number (VIN) etching yourself with a home-etching kit that would cost you as little as $20. Dealers would charge you hundreds of dollars if you want them to do it for you
  • Stick to the total cost of a vehicle and the shortest-term car loan available. The so called ‘Finance managers’ often try to stretch the payments over a long period of time. Long-term loans trap people into buying cars they can’t afford and by the time the loan is paid for, the car will have entirely depreciated
  • Research thoroughly on the vehicle or vehicles you plan to purchase or lease. Check with the loan officer at their bank or credit union beforehand for the credit offer. Compare the same information with the options given by the ‘Finance managers’ at the showrooms
  • Don’t mention any price until you’ve selected a vehicle to buy, and then ask the salesperson for his or her very best offer. Remember that a car payment should cost no more than 12% to 15% of your after-tax monthly income
  • Don’t discuss add-ons like warranties or trade-in prices until you’ve agreed on the price for the car. If you do otherwise it leads to a confusion as to how much you’re actually paying for the vehicle
  • If the dealer asks for your Social Security Number (SSN) or Credit Report, leave. Your name and drivers’ license should be enough to start the deal
  • Do not let the dealer run a credit check until the payment negotiations are finished

If you feel that you are not comfortable with the deal, walk away. There always is another car at another dealership for you to own on your terms.

GM Recalls 14,245 Cadillac DTS and V8 Buick Lucerne Models

Car Issues No Comments »

Automaker General Motors is recalling 14,245 Cadillac DTS and Buick Lucerne cars with V8 engines. According to the GM the vehicles has a starter or alternator cable that is wrongly coming in contact with the power steering return line. The company is targeting model year 2010 and 2011 Lucerne and DTS vehicles. According to a letter on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website, the recall is announced following reports of two fires. These fires are related to electrical arcing triggered by leaking fluid coming into contact with the starter or alternator cable.

According to the automaker the starter and alternator cables were incorrectly installed so they touch a power-steering line, as stated in the letter to NHTSA, the U.S. auto-safety regulator.

According to the Detroit, Michigan-based auto giant GM

  • This contact could cause the cable to wear through the power steering line
  • The wearing out of cable can cause the power steering fluid to leak
  • This leak will sooner or later lead to the loss of power steering
  • This kind of contact also may wear away the cable protective wrap, conduit and wire insulation
  • If there is metal-to-metal contact, which could result in battery drain
  • If the exposed battery cable separates from the power-steering line, there could be enough sparks for a hole to be melted in the line
  • If the power steering fluid contacts hot metal parts of the engine, there could be a fire,

There have been four fires reported but there have been no injuries or fatalities associated with this problem. GM will repair the cars, which are under warranty, free of charge to owners.

GM this year has recalled 1.53 million cars and trucks for a windshield-wiper flaw that may cause fires and 303,100 Impala cars in the U.S. because seat belts in the front seat may not be properly anchored and may fail to restrain passengers in a crash. General Motors is recalling nearly 14,000 sedans to address potential problems with power steering.

Chrysler recall

  • Chrysler is recalling about 16,000 Jeep Liberty SUVs to fix faulty windshield wiper systems
  • Chrysler’s recall involves some of the 2008 model year Jeep Liberty SUVs
  • Water could get into the windshield wiper motor and stop the wipers
  • If the wipers fail it reduces a driver’s visibility and may lead to a crash
